Acupuncture and modern science - The Yin and Yang of Quantum Mechanics

The great Danish physicist Niels Bohr (1885 - -1962) is equaled by few of his contemporaries in the 20th century.  Bohr established the now well known science of quantum mechanics, at the heart of which lies his theoretical description of the essence of matter and the universe is the dual nature of reality at the sub-atomic level.  Apparently, Bohr was capable of seeing the correlation between the philosophy of the dào and the structure of matter through the perspective of quantum mechanics.  The concepts of Chi, Yin and Yang have played a central role in the development of scientific though since they were first introduced to Western Europe at the latter end of the 17th century.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 5,000 years ago, acupuncture began to become better known in the United States in the early 1970's.

The term acupuncture indicates a procedure whereby incredibly thin needles are inserted into specific points located on energetic meridians or "channels" which cover the human body.  Once the needles are inserted, various forms of stimulation such as electro therapy, warming moxabustion or needle thrusting and rotation may be applied to achieve "De Qi" - a mild electrical or numbing sensation which occurs when "Chi" energy has arrived at the needle.

What is moxabustion?

Moxabustion is technique using a dried herb  moxa (Artemesia Vulgaris), is burned on or above the skin at specific acupuncture points.  Moxabustion therapy is excellent for chronic pain conditions as it promotes circulation, warms and activates the Chi and increases a persons overall energy levels.  Most people find warming moxabustion therapy quite pleasant, especially when the winter months cause an increase in joint pain or for those suffering from symptoms of colds and flu.

What to expect on your first treatment

Your first session will require a consultation which may last anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on the severity and duration of the condition.  During the one on one consultation we focus on finding the root cause of any health issues you require assistance with.  Some of the topics covered would be:

    •    Main complaint
    •    Underlying symptoms
    •    Pain related symptoms
    •    Medical history
    •    Family medical history
    •    Menstrual history (women)
    •    Diet and eating habits
    •    Lifestyle - work and family
    •    Mental - Emotional state

After the consultation you will be lead to one of several bright and comfortable treatment rooms to relax while an acupuncture point prescription is finalized.  Once this is complete insertion of the acupuncture needles will begin, this should take no more than 3 minutes and is relatively painless.

During the treatment

Needles are retained for approximately 20 to 30 minutes depending on the presenting condition, during this time most people report a feeling of deep relaxation which continues for several hours or even days days afterwards.  We strongly recommend against driving for at least 30 minutes post treatment to allow your mind and body to re-adjust.  Acupuncture strongly moves the body's physical, mental and spiritual energies - we understand that this may be difficult for some to accept but nevertheless a 15 to 20 minute walk in the fresh air after a treatment session is highly recommended.

Follow up visits

Requirement for follow up visits depends on the presenting condition.  As a general rule I recommend between 3 and 8 once weekly visits to see significant improvement, however, those with chronic health issues which have been present for several years may require long term care.
